Clipstone family celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month takes place throughout October, and one family have involved their school to help celebrate.

Kinnisha Lawrence, 27 and her sons Dontay Cooper, 7, and Fletcher Cooper, 4, from Clipstone, are celebrating black history month.

The boys' school, Samuel Barlow Primary Academy, on Church Road Clipstone, is holding a series of events to teach pupils about black history and culture.

Kinnisha said: "Not many schools teach about Black History Month, and they need to know about it.

"It can be a touchy subject for some, and this is all about about teaching kids and parents.

"Parents will be welcome to come along to the events, as racism is often learned behaviour so it's important to teach the parents as well. .

"The head of Samuel Barlow Primary Academy, Mrs Brown has done amazing to help organise Black History Month."

Melanie Brown, Principal of Samuel Barlow Primary Academy said: "It is really important that children appreciate diversity, although black and mixed children may be a minority at our school, it's important that all races are celebrated.

"You don't see many schools celebrating Black History Month, we are part of the The Diverse Academies Trust, so promoting diversity is important to us.

All through next week, the pupils will learn about the Windrush Generation, and each class will learn about a different era or person important to black history.

There will also be an Afro-Caribbean hairdresser to teach children about hair care, as well as Caribbean cooking demonstrations.
