Classical musicians entertain school with viola skills

The classes have been working with Derbyshire Music Partnership teachers, learning how to read musical notation and how to use pulse and rhythm.

Tracey Newbury, music coordinator at the school, said: “It is a good opportunity for those who are interested in music.

“The theory is if they start young they are more likely to carry on into secondary school.”

Pupils start the lessons Year 2 and progress to more advanced levels by years 4-5. They are awarded badges each time they achieve a new stage.

Said Ms Newbury: “It helps them build confidence and self-image. They can achieve in ways that are not just about pieces of paper.

“We hold concerts every two terms - it gives the students a chance to show-off the new skills they have learned to parents.”
