Community spirit came to the fore when the Garibaldi Road area of Mansfield held its first Christmas lights switch-on.

About 200 people flocked to the event, which was organised by Coun Sid Walker, UKIP member for the Newlands ward of Mansfield District Council, with generous funding help from local businessman George Thompson, of United Carpets.

Santa and enthusiastic youngsters switched on the lights, while other attractions included a fireworks display, refreshments and late-night Christmas shopping. Coun Walker said: “It was a brilliant night, and we hope to expand the event in future years.”
