In May 2011 I was honoured to be elected by my colleagues to the position of Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, writes Coun Keith Walker, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council.
In addition to the important formal duty of chairing the Council meetings I have had the pleasure of travelling the length and breadth of our great county visiting many fantastic events and places.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and talk to Nottinghamshire County Council service users of all ages, from the youngest in our children’s centres and youth clubs to the oldest using our meals, day care and residential care services.
Even as an experienced county councillor with more than 20 years’ service, it still amazes me to see at first hand the vast number of ways this local authority assists and enhances people’s lives each and every day. I have particularly enjoyed meeting our employees who do such valuable work and are thoroughly deserving of the recognition conveyed by a Chairman’s visit.
I have also had the honour of communicating the gratitude of Nottinghamshire people to many current and former service personnel, who put their lives in danger at home and overseas to protect our safety and security. I stated at the Ceremony of Remembrance outside County Hall on 11th November that we must never forget the individual sacrifices made on our behalf and, for this reason, I am proud to have selected The Royal British Legion as my Chairman’s Charity.
Despite a period of great economic uncertainty when personal and family budgets have been so stretched, it is typical of the kindness and generosity of Nottinghamshire people that The Royal British Legion and many other charitable causes continue to enjoy strong support. I am confident that at the end of my term of office a healthy sum of money will have been raised.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the county a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. There is no doubt that 2011 has been a tough year for many, but I hope 2012 will bring peace and happiness.
