The Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner paid a visit to the town’s station this week.

While there, he said: “I’m confident that we can maintain a police presence in Southwell.

“I hope that we can conclude the matter soon and positively but we do have other alternatives if that doesn’t prove possible.”

The force currently rents a police base in Southwell Town Council’s offices but requires less space than the original facilities provide.

Discussions are currently underway with the council to reduce the size of the space the force occupies.

Mr Tipping added: “The public will still be able to contact their local police officers in Southwell. I appreciate fully how important that is to them.”
