Chancellor pulls pints and surprises birthday party in Ravenshead

He visited the popular venue to throw his support behind Mark Spencer, who is hoping to retain the crucial Sherwood seat for the Conservatives in tomorrow’s poll.

Mr Osborne chatted to staff, regulars and diners during his two-hour visit.

He also pulled pints and joined one party celebrating a diner’s 40th birthday, helping to light the candles and then singing Happy Birthday to the surprised guest.

“It was definitely a 40th birthday meal I won’t forget in a hurry,” said the celebrating diner.

“It was fascinating to see him in that light and environment rather than how you see him on TV and in Parliament.”

Last night’s visit was the second by Mr Osborne to the Sherwood constituency since campaigning began in early April.

Sherwood is regarded as one of the country’s key marginal seats, with Mr Spencer defending a majority of little more than 200 votes.

Prime Minister David Cameron, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and former Education Secretary Michael Gove have all visited the constituency urging voters to stick with Mr Spencer.

The Tories face a fierce challenge from Labour’s Leonie Mathers, who has been joined on the campaign trail by Labour big guns Ed Balls, Rachel Reeves and Andy Burnham in recent weeks.

Also standing in Sherwood are Sally Chadd (UKIP), Lydia Davies-Bright (Green Party), Daniel Mosley (Liberal Democrat) and David Perkins (Class War).
