CBEEBIES star Chris Pizzey says both children and adults can expect a family show with plenty of laughs when he stars in panto Jack and the Beanstalk at Mansfield’s Palace Theatre this Christmas.
But the star of TV’s Basil Brush said the highlight of the show was the song sheet at the end when he gets children singing on stage.
Said Chris: “I love the live aspect of not knowing what will come out of their mouths. It is so important to get the kids involved and have a giggle.”
As Chris explains, this is a slightly different version of the famous children’s story to that most people are used to. “It is hard to show a giant on stage,” said Chris.
“So there is a villain like Fleshcreep who is the giant’s servant.
“I am Simple Simon, Jack’s brother. I bring a little light relief and get the kids shouting and wind them up, then send them home.”
Fleshcreep is played by ex-Doctor Who Colin Baker while Emma Nowell, of TV show Hi 5, plays Jack.
Said Chris; “I have met Colin briefly and he seems like a nice guy and up for lots of giggles, so it should be a good panto because he is really up for it.
“He used to be Doctor Who and I was in the Sarah Jane Adventures, which was a Doctor Who spin-off. Emma seems lovely as well. I think it helps keep the innocence of the play when we have a female playing Jack, too.
“Panto is often the first time a lot of children have been to the theatre so it is important that we nail it and make sure they go home laughing.”
This will be Chris’ first time in Mansfield and the actor is moving his young family to the town while he works the Christmas period - the show runs from 3rd December to 8th January.
Said Chris: “My character does a lot of shouting and screaming and I call it my once a year diet.
“I have to make sure I eat well and drink plenty of water to keep well.”
Tickets are £12 or £11 with concessions and family tickets are £10 each.
