Cash gift for young performing artists

Magdala has been running youth music projects in Ashfield for 14 years and uses its experienced musical artists to train young people to develop musical productions.

Performing arts students at Sutton Centre Academy are working with Magdala currently to deliver performance workshops for a group of adult learners.

Tim Lole, artist in residence at Magdala, said: “We are very pleased. We were not sure if Ashfield District Council would support us this time around, so we are delighted.

“Students who take part have a fantastic time - it is a real eye-opener for them.”

To celebrate the project’s success Magdala is staging an operatic performance based on Rossini’s Cinderella at Quarrydale School, Sutton, on Thursday at 7pm.

Ashfield young music leaders will work with students and professional artists to bring the classic opera alive for parents and teachers on the night.

Said Tim: “They will be performing alongside professional singers from Paris.

“These are the operatic equivalent of Premier League footballers. It is going to be amazing.”

The production is open to the general public and free of charge.

A Magdala spokesman said: “Magdala’s students are people of all abilities and from every possible background who enjoy the experience of making music together and at the same time aspire to achieve the highest possible musical standards, individually and collectively.”
