Cancer survivors book aims to inspire

Farmer’s wife Pauline Hatton, who now lives in Nuthall, has used her artistic talents to enhance the publication of “It’ll Never Happen to Me” which she describes as “One woman’s journey through Cancerland.”

Pauline (71),who lives at Redfield House Farm with her devoted and supportive husband of 49-years, John, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 following a routine mammogram at Nottingham’s City Hospital.

Despite the trauma of knowing that she had the disease, Pauline took a positive stance and bravely kept faith in the professionalism of the staff at the City Hospital who worked wonders to ensure that she had the best possible treatment.

Just when she thought that she had come through the worst Pauline suffered a terrible setback a year later when doctors discovered another cancer in her breast.

In 2010 surgeons removed both breast cancers and following extensive treatment she was given the green light to continue her busy lifestyle.

“The Breast Cancer Support Group at the City Hospital have been amazing and along with my family have given me a new lease of life,” she said.

“My encounter with breast cancer has inspired me to compile by book which is made up of 21 pages of rhyming couplets interspersed with ten relevant cartoon like drawings. Each one is depicting my journey through Cancerland”.

Just when Pauline thought that she was getting back to normality she suffered more health problems and has recently undergone an operation to have a hip replacement.

“ It never rains but it pours, but I am a determined person who has a lot to be thankful for.” said Pauline

As well as being the Branch Leader of the Three Crosses Mothers Union group. Pauline is a member of the Hucknall Art Society, she helps out on the farm and is currently involved in organising a school class reunion.

Born in Hucknall, in Windmill Grove, Pauline was educated at Beardall Infants and Spring Street Junior Schools and later at Brincliffe Grammar School.

She has already raised more than £400 for the Nottingham City Hospital Breast Cancer Support group from the sale of her book which is priced at £3-00 plus postage and packing.
