Nottinghamshire County Council has recently installed road signs warning HGV drivers that there is now a 7.5 tonne weight limit in force on Chesterfield Road .

Residents had been campaigning for years to get the restriction imposed because of safety concerns and due to problems caused by large lorries travelling along the road at all times of the day and night.

Residents Colin Renshaw, Trevor Sowter and Wendy Oakley have been at the forefront of the campaign and they eventually turned to Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero for help after becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress they were making.

Gloria first took up the case almost three years ago and in October last year, the council’s Transport and Highways Committee gave the green-light for the scheme.

After a delay of several months, the signs have now gone up on the road and lorries are no longer allowed to use this stretch.

Gloria said it was good to see the council acting on residents’ concerns: “I’m absolutely thrilled for residents in Huthwaite because they have finally got the result they have been campaigning for after all of these years.

“Their hard work and a refusal to take no for an answer has paid off and it is no more than they deserve.”

“The County Council received a request from local residents to put in a weight restriction on Chesterfield Road because of the number of lorries travelling along what is, in places, quite a narrow road with residential properties built right up against the side of the road,” said Paul Hillier, of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Highways team.

“Now that the limit is in force and the signs are in place, we hope that it will bring benefit to the residents who live on that road.”
