Cabbies face football shirt ban

LOCAL cab drivers could be banned from wearing football shirts and baseball caps after Mansfield District Council agreed to write to taxi company owners on the issue.

The authority’s licensing committee decided earlier this month to consult on the ideas on the grounds of smartness and public safety.

Members said a ban on football shirts could promote a more professional image and a ban on hats could give lone women passengers more confidence to use a licensed taxi at night.

Several local firms told Chad they had no initial objections to the idea.

Petra Lucas, owner of B & F Taxis, said: “I can see where they are coming from because when they’ve had a drink people can sometimes be very protective when it comes to their football team.”
