Getting a taste of life behind bars

People in the East Midlands with dreams of running their own pub will have a chance to make those dreams a reality, when leading pub company Punch Taverns visits Nottingham for its annual roadshow.

Punch Taverns will be visiting the East Midlands Conference Centre on Tuesday 1st November, where potential licensees can find out about pubs available to let in the Nottingham area and see first hand the support that Punch provides.

Punch recruitment manager, Alyson Swann, said: “We are inviting prospective licensees who want to know more about running a pub to visit the roadshow and get advice on entering the trade. We have a range of more than 5,000 pubs, from community locals to gastropubs, for licensees to take on with the freedom to run them as their own individual business, as well as having the backing and support of a trusted partner.

“The roadshows are a great opportunity for business people thinking about leasing a pub to talk to Punch representatives, who will be showcasing the network of support we provide, including training, catering and marketing, as well as talking to the BII for free, impartial industry advice.

“We are constantly looking for innovative and creative people we can work in partnership with to build successful, sustainable businesses in our core estate of high quality pubs. Our licensees have come from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from teaching to banking, with core skills, such as customer service and management, which have helped make a success of their business.”

Punch licensees Janice and Phil Shaw took on the Star Inn in Mansfield last year and have really turned the pub around. Janice, who managed pubs for 15 years before taking on the Star as her first lease, introduced cask ales and a new menu and has really put the pub at the heart of the local community again by holding beer festivals and fundraising events in the garden.

Janice commented: “We were really shocked in how such a short space of time we transformed the pub into the success it is today. I believe that it’s down to the right operator to make the pub thrive. I’ve put my heart into running the pub and I treat it as I would my home.

“The experience I’ve gained from managing pubs beforehand has really helped me run the Star as my own. I really enjoy seeing how I can turn it around to put it back on the map and I get great satisfaction when I receive positive comments from the locals telling me how pleased they are. I wish I leased my own pub years ago and I’m looking to take on another pub with Punch at the moment.

“We went to our first Punch roadshow last year and we really enjoyed seeing the different support that Punch offered and meeting the teams. We’re hoping to go along to the next one.”

Alyson added: “Anyone is welcome to attend the roadshow and have a chat with us on a no commitment basis to see if running a pub is right for them.”

The roadshow is taking place at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham from 10.30am until 4pm on Tuesday 1st November. Anyone interested in attending should pre-register by calling 0844 848 3264.

The record-breaking roadshows will also be heading to Newcastle, Leeds, Twickenham, Birmingham, Chester, Bolton, Luton, Edinburgh, Exeter and Bristol.

Punch Taverns is a leading pub company in the UK with over 5,000 leased and tenanted pubs nationwide.
