Burglars target Kirkby supermarket in 4am raid

A Kirkby supermarket which was broken into by burglars overnight has now reopened.

The raid took place at the Co-op store in Chapel Street at around 4am this morning (November 29).

The burglars caused damage to a roof but only got away with what was described as a ‘small amount of alcohol’.

The store was closed for most of the day while the shop was made safe but is now reopen.

A spokesperson from Central England Co-operative said: “We can confirm that an attempted robbery took place this morning (Wednesday 29 November) at our Chapel Street food store.

“No one was harmed during the incident, but there was some damage to the store roof which has now been made secure and safe and the store is back open for customers.

“We are working with the police while they investigate this matter.”

Facebook posts suggest the thieves may have tried to gain access via the shop’s roof, but this has not yet been confirmed by police.

A police spokesman confirmed they were investigating reports of a burglary at the store.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 44 of Wednesday, 29 November.
