Bungalow plans for Edwinstowe pub car park

A section of a village pub car park could be transformed into new housing, but the business will remain open.

An application has been submitted to council planners to build four bungalows across part of the car park at Edwinstowe’s The Manvers Arms.

In a statement put before Newark and Sherwood District Council, the applicant said the number of vehicles that now use the car park when visiting the pub on Mansfield Road is diminishing and the majority of customers walk to the pub from the surrounding housing estates.

In addition, it claims there are very few bungalows in the area and there is a demand for single-storey homes. Access to the pub would remain from Mansfield Road.

The plans have been given the backing of Edwinstowe Parish Council.

Chairman Celia Brooks said: “It’s on a very large plot so as far as we were concerned there is enough space.

“Up until a few months ago is was even being used an overflow for a local garage. Houses will be as good an alternative to a car park.

“Builders aren’t building many bungalows these days and if people want to downsize as they get older there isn’t the choice.”

Coun John Peck added: “I do not see any problems, it’s a very large car park that is underused, and it will help address the need for housing.”

The landlord of the pub, who is also the applicant, did not want to comment on the application.
