Brave Ollerton businessman gets Royal Humane Society Award after helping save a car smash victim

A brave Ollerton businessman has received a Royal Humane Society Award after he went to the aid of a motorist who was trapped in his car following a road smash.

James McGinley, owner of the Tyre Shop Ollerton, was presented with the award by Robert Farrier of Mansfield Woodhouse this week.

Aircraft engineer Robert was trapped in his car after it hit a tree following a smash on the A616 near Little Carlton.

Mr Farrier, 59 said: “I was trapped in the car and James climbed in the back of the car and supported my neck until the ambulance arrived.

“He was brilliant and followed instructions to help me until the fire services cut me free.

“The car started smoking and it was potentially very dangerous situation.

“I nominated him for the award because of his bravery.”

James said: “I had just got back from Newark and I was first on the scene. The car was in a tree and his legs ere smashed in- it was quite scary.

“I realised I knew Robert as a customer. I just kept talking to him as he was falling into unconsciousness.

“The real heroes of the night were the firefighters - they were amazing.”
