Brave bunny cheats the reaper

A rabbit from Sutton has made the final of a national competition to find the nation’s most remarkable pet survivor.

Two-year-old Charlie caught the judges’ attention in the PDSA vet charity’s annual Pet Survivor competition after he contracted the killer disease myxomatosis in September 2013.

Vets gave him little chance of recovering from a condition normally fatal for an unvaccinated rabbit.

Owner Alexandria said Charlie was diagnosed with myxomatosis after displaying classic symptoms of the disease, such as swollen eyes and genitals: “I don’t think they expected him to survive as it was such a severe case, but we all persevered and his recovery was quite spectacular.”

Alexandria devoted herself to nursing Charlie at home and finally, after two months, he beat the dreadful disease.
