Bottoms up for beer festival

Real ale lovers should dust off their taste buds and prepare for a treat as South Normanton’s first ever beer and cider festival begins tomorrow.

The event will feature 40 ales and 12 ciders and perries with all of the former sourced within 25 five miles of the town’s Post Mill Centre on Market Street.

Carl Brett, of Mansfield and Ashfield CAMRA, said he hoped the event, which runs everyday until Sunday, would enthuse people in the area to try more real ale.

He added: “I think it should be an event for the whole community to get behind.

“We are hoping for support from the whole community to put beer on the map.

“It fits in with the LocAle campaign which CAMRA supports. More and more people are becoming aware of how far their beer is travelling and drinking local ale helps reduce pollution from transport.”

Amongst the breweries featured will be Dancing Duck, Lincoln Green, Raw, who have just reopened Mansfield’s The Brown Cow, and Welbeck Abbey.

Punters who drink in CAMRA-supported pubs in the region can earn themselves a free drink at the festival. They should speak to landlords for details.

These pubs include the Villager, the Devonshire Arms and Hawthornes, all in South Normanton.

Said Carl: “We are hoping to bring more real ale drinkers into the village to support local pubs and the venue we are using does not sell it so we hope this will be a success and encourage the management to bring it in.

“There are no additives in real ale - it is a genuine product with five natural ingredients. It is a far better product.”
