Botched Hucknall robbers given joint total of 15 years

Three men have been sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison after a botched robbery in Hucknall.

Following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court Andrew Dale Wheelhouse, 31, David James Mura, 26, and Guramit Singh Kalirai, 31, were convicted of attempted robbery.

The court heard that the three men had planned a raid on Simply Hydro, in Wigwam Lane on Thursday 2nd May 2013.

The men entered the property at about 12.30pm and targeted a shop assistant demanding money.

They pinned him to the ground and bound him while making threats to slash his throat.

Police were called when workers at a neighbouring business heard shouts and raised the alarm.

They managed to detain Mura, of Albert Avenue, Stapleford, who was hiding in a wall partition. He was arrested.

The investigation led police to Wheelhouse, of Alfreton, Derbyshire, and Kalirai, of Ullswater Crescent, Bramcote, and they were both arrested.

Ahead of the trial Kalirai absconded. He was tried in absence and yesterday (Tuesday 24 September 2013) sentenced to six and a half years in prison. A warrant is now out for his arrest.

Wheelhouse was found guilty of attempted robbery and sentenced to five and a half years in prison and Mura was sentenced to three years and three months.

Det Insp Rich Monk, of Ashfield CID, said: “This was a planned attack on a business premises during opening hours. Thankfully no one was seriously injured.

“The quick thinking and brave assistance provided by staff at nearby business premises resulted in the robbery being thwarted and an offender being arrested at the scene.

“I would also like to thank the officers and staff involved in the investigation who worked tirelessly in bringing the three to justice.

“Enquires are continuing to locate Kalarai. I would urge anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to come forward so that he can be brought before the Court.”
