Books on Wheels is a ‘vital service’

Being elderly, ill or house-bound does not mean you can’t access the delights of literature classics or murder mysteries through books.

Nottinghamshire Books on Wheels is a service run in conjunction with the Royal Voluntary Service.

They enable the district’s libraries to enter the homes of residents who can’t access the facilities in person.

This could be for a variety of reasons including being housebound, having a life-shortening illness or being disabled.

“It is a vital service our volunteers provide,” said service manager, Christine Precious. “Some of our service users might not see anybody from one week to the next so as well as supplying books it is much more than that.

“Our Nottinghamshire County Books on Wheels Service is extremely popular and I am in a position that I would like to expand the current service within Hucknall,” said Christine. “ I therefore need to find new users for this service as well as volunteers.

“Our volunteers visit people to find out what kind of books they would like, through the authors or genres then collect from the library and return them to their home.

“It’s also a chance for residents to seek advice about access to other services,” explained Christine. “This could be the meals on wheels service or home adaptations.”

The service is provided in partnership with libraries.

“This is an invaluable outreach service and we can also help with large print and talking books too,” added Hucknall library manager Sharon Wells.

All volunteers are Disclosure and Barring Service checked.
