Bolsover District Council is urging its residents to make sure they dispose of their waste properly.
Most people either take their waste to their local recycling centre or recycle it at home via the various recycling schemes the Council operates. But some hire a skip or a company in to take their waste away – and this could lead to problems, according to the council.
A spokesman said that if you allow someone to take your waste, whether for payment or not and they dump it illegally, you could be prosecuted and end up with up to a £5,000 fine as you are still responsible for the waste.
Bolsover District Council’s Director of Development, Kevin Hopkinson said: “We have new ways of detecting exactly where fly tipping originated from and if you have not checked that the person taking away your rubbish is a registered waste carrier, you will be liable and could face a hefty fine.
“The majority of waste carriers are responsible law abiding companies, but there are some out there who just want to make a quick buck and fly tip your waste. So I would urge anyone who is tidying up their home or garden this spring to make sure they thoroughly check who is disposing of their waste for them.”
The council says to avoid a court appearance, and a hefty fine, follow these rules:
Always use a registered waste carrier
To check if someone is registered or to find a registered waste carrier close to you, call 08708 506506 or check online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregister
Keep a record of the details (name, description, vehicle registration number) of the person(s) collecting your rubbish.
Never let itinerant collectors collect your rubbish unless they show some identity and their waste carrier’s registration.
If you want to dispose of your own refuse there are waste recycling centres including the ones at Buttermilk Lane, Bolsover S44 6AE, Sheffield Road, Stonegravels, Chesterfield S41 7LF or Heanor Amenity Site off Taylor Lane Loscoe.
