Bolsover District Council is inviting landowners to suggest locations which may be suitable for gypsies and travellers as part of its draft Local Plan, which sets out proposed future developments in the area.

A district council spokesman said: "The 2015 Derby and Derbyshire Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment (2015) identifies a need for 17 pitches to be provided in the district between 2014 and 2034.

"One pitch has already been identified, and extensions to existing sites are under review, but these will not be enough to meet the identified need.

"The council, in consultation with the Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group, does not wish to see all of these pitches in one location.

"Instead, smaller family sites are preferred but with sufficient space to accommodate family needs as families grow. Therefore, sites no larger than approximately 0.6 acres would be required.

"A pitch is an area of land where a gypsy or traveller household can reside – typically this may contain a building, parking space and one or more caravans with sufficient space to enable the easy manoeuvrability of caravans up to 20 metres in length.

"The site must be accessible by vehicles and be served, or be capable of being served, with water, electricity, drainage and sanitation."

In addition, the council is seeking to identify 13 plots for travelling showpeople who hold events including circuses and fairs.

The draft Local Plan also states 3,600 dwellings need to be built in the district by 2033.

Residents are being urged to comment on the masterplan HERE as part of a six-week consultation running until December 12.

Public consultation events will also take place across Bolsover district throughout November.
