Body of 70-year-old woman found after house fire in Nottinghamshire village

An investigation has now been launched to establish the circumstances of the woman’s death.

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, is thought to have lived at the house in Manor Close, Costock.

A cordon remains in place at the scene and is expected to be there for some time while Nottinghamshire Police work with Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service to investigate the incident.

Nottinghamshire Police was called at around 3.20am on Saturday, November 7, to assist colleagues from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service as they responded to a report at a large house fire.

Manor Close and it’s junction with Main Street are currently closed to accommodate the scene and it is expected that they will remain closed for some time.

Detective Inspector Rachael North, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It is very early days in our investigation into this incident but unfortunately we can confirm that a woman has died.

“A man in his 60s has been to hospital as a precaution and we are now working hard with our colleagues at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to establish the circumstances.

“This may take some time as the house needs to be made safe for investigators to enter the building.

“I’d like to thank the local community for their support and patience while we conduct our enquiries.”

Area Manager Damien West, of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the elderly lady who has sadly past away after this tragic incident.

"We remain on scene and are working in partnership with Notts Police, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR).

"A full joint Fire and Police investigation is to be carried out later today. I would like to thank the local community for their understanding and patience as we continue carrying out our investigations.

"As a close knit community, we know that incidents like this have a huge impact. We will be in the area over coming days to offer reassurance and support following this tragic incident."
