The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Leukaemia and Lymphoma Bikeathon, held over a choice of a nine or 19-mile course, was held on Sunday’s perfect summer’s day.

The ride was started by six year old Joe Hogan from Mansfield, who contracted leukaemia when just two years but is now in remission.

Many of the marshals who ringed the route were student volunteers while others were staff from the Nottingham Academy and Nottingham Girls Academy.

They were up at the crack of dawn amid exam season to help ensure all the riders safely negotiated the course.

Also supporting the event were Bike Riders and ESS Showhire of Retford, Luke Staton of OutKlass Fitness at East Drayton and Severn Trent, who provided all the water.

“It was a marvellous day which we hope will herald this ride again becoming a regular fixture for our us,” said David Shelton, chairman of the Nottingham and Notts branch of the charity.

“The event helps raise funds, heighten awareness of the work of the charity and is a great arena for meeting many of the very caring people you normally hear so little about.

“Without them, as riders, service providers and helpers, this event would not happen.”
