The Fountain Bridge pub on Sutton Road has beaten off competition from more than 1,000 pubs to be crowned best pint in the county.

Heineken owned Star Pubs & Bars ran the competition with judges saying the win was down to the hard work and meticulous standards of licensee Michael Perry who transformed the rundown pub.

ddd it over two years ago investing in a £350k refurbishment and creating a carvery to restore it to its former glory as an outstanding pub.

He said: “Although we were adding a carvery, with 30 other pubs within two miles, I knew the Fountain Bridge would live or die on the quality of its beer. First impressions count and a pint is the first thing most of our customers order, our aim is to ensure it looks good and tastes good from the top to the bottom of the glass.”

The judges were bowled over by Michael’s commitment to serving the perfect pint and to his extensive choice of 10 draught beers and ciders. They noted that his investment in a cellar upgrade, specialist staff training, quality spot checks and six monthly replacement of glasses help ensure the Fountain Bridge serves an outstanding pint time after time.

Michael received the coveted prize from football legend and broadcaster Chris Kamara at a gala awards night in London.

Michael added: “We’re on cloud nine. We put so much time and effort into serving the perfect pint and this award is a fantastic acknowledgement of that and of our 17 brilliant bar staff who pull the pints day after day. Without them, this win would not have been possible.”

tar Pubs & Bars trading director, Chris Jowsey, said: “The hallmark of a good pub is a great pint and with a choice of ten beers and ciders on tap the Fountain Bridge has something to satisfy all palates. The enthusiasm and friendliness of the staff is fantastic. Michael has done an excellent job in turning round the Fountain Bridge making it proof of the enduring popularity of the great local pub.”
