Bellamy Road says ‘thanks’ with flowers

Mansfield District Council’s community engagement officer, Sioned Dolan, and Notts County Council community engagement officer, Jessica Knight, received the floral tributes from Bellamy Road’s Community Stakeholder’s Group.

The duo were recognised for their ‘on-going efforts to upgrade Bellamy Road’s public perception’ at a meeting in May despite ongoing cuts.

Roy Bainton, of West Hill Avenue, said: “We wanted to recognise their hard work over the years in building community spirit on the estate and helping to meet the challenges of finding new funding for projects in the face of increasing austerity.

“This has seen even Mansfield and Nottinghamshire councils axing funds for community projects.

“Despite the struggles to keep the Stakeholder Group and Residents’ Association going, Sioned and Jessica, have still managed to keep community spirit rolling forward with various events with the aim of enhancing Bellamy Road’s reputation.

Mr Bainton, editor of the Bellamy Bugle community newsletter - now in its tenth year of publication - said the estate has had a bad press in the past.

He added: “The estate has the only internet café in Mansfield, Y5 - which runs a homework club for youngsters after school where they can get a drink and a sandwich.

“It’s also got well-run community allotment, its own charity shop, and frequently runs successful events such as the Big Lunch and summer spectaculars.”
