A 52-year-old woman from Rainworth bombarded the police with hundreds of 999 calls that were malicious and not urgent, a court heard.

Now Jenny Jones, of Kirklington Road, has been issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which bans her from ringing 999 for any reason other than a genuine emergency.

The CBO, which runs until June 2020, was imposed at Mansfield Magistrates Court after a case brought by Newark and Sherwood District Council in conjunction with the police.

The court was told that Jones made the calls over the past 18 months, and nearly all were abusive to the call-handling staff. She was also prohibited from using the 101 non-emergency number after making similar calls to that, and banned from making contact with several residents of Rainworth after harassing a neighbour.

A second CBO was imposed on Lee Bowman, 41, of no fixed address, after another application made by the council.

Bowman, who has a long history of anti-social behaviour, was banned from almost all shops in Ollerton town centre and prohibited from using threatening, intimidating, insulting or abusive words or behaving in such a way that might cause alarm to the public in Ollerton and Boughton.

The order is in place for two years and, if breached, he could face a prison sentence.

Coun David Lloyd, leader of the council, said: “These cases serve to demonstrate that we will not tolerate behaviour by individuals that causes alarm and distress.”

Insp Louise Clarke, of the police, said: “We worked closely with Lee Bowman to offer him opportunities to change his lifestyle, but he chose to ignore them.

“Similarly, Jenny Jones continued her behaviour, despite efforts to support and deter her. She was taken to court as a last resort as she refused to comply with requests to stop.”
