She has sent an open letter to Borough Council Leader, Richard Jackson, complaining about the signs and asking for reassurances that the Council is still open to other options.

She said: “I am upset and angry to discover that ‘To Let’ signs have been put up at the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre.

“The council leader looked me and others in the eye and told us he was committed to exploring options for the future of the centre.

“I am asking for reassurances that this has just been a terrible mistake and that I and the people of Eastwood have not been let down.”

The centre, which is based in Durban House, was built in 1896 for The Barber Walker mining company and was once the wages offices for Brinsley Colliery, where DH Lawrence would go as a boy to collect his father’s pay packet.

It is also a venue for the popular month-long annual Lawrence festival.
