Ashfield infant Schools are top of the class in league tables

An Ashfield primary school head said he was ‘absolutely thrilled’ after his school came top of Government league tables for Nottinghamshire.

Orchard Primary School and Nursery in Kirkby top of the class in North Nottinghamshire for Key Stage 2 results, which have been released by the Department for Education.

And in close second place came Sutton’s St Mary Magdalene CofE (VA) Primary.

The tables show the percentage of pupils achieving level 4 in reading writing and maths and the percentage of pupils who have made at least two levels of progress in the subjects between the ages of 7 and 11.

Orchard Primary School came top of the league in Nottinghamshire and fourth in the UK.

Pupils achieved 100 percent in virtually every indicator. This means students are hitting or bettering the targets in reading, writing and maths.

Headteacher Rob Cook, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to bits - it is a really fantastic achievement.

“When you consider where we are in an ex-mining town rather than the leafy suburbs the kids have done really well.

“We have some amazing children and support from parents and families is second to none.

“We have some amazing staff , teachers, teaching assistants and even the admin staff and the site manager who support everyone else in their work.

“Everyone works really hard and the place has a buzz about it.

“The kids have worked really hard doing extra classes for school in the evenings.”

He added: “Kirkby as a whole has done really well and we are surrounded by very strong schools.”
