Ashfield 12-year-old becomes charity ambassador as mini Doctor Who

A Sutton schoolboy has become a national ambassador for a children's charity after his hard work fundraising as a mini celebrity.

George Buckland, who is also known as ‘mini Matt Smith’, is now an ambassador for Dreams Come True - a charity which helps youngsters with serious and life-limiting conditions.

The 12-year-old has raised thousands by appearing as a guest at events dressed as the Doctor Who character, as well as sponsors for his YouTube channel, which has more than 70,000 subscribers.

George said his “mind was blown” when he found out by surprise he was being made an ambassador in front of 5,000 people at an event in Birmingham at the weekend.

He said: “All I try to do is help other children have a dream and make their lives a little better - I never thought I would be recognised for doing this.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, I can still hear the crowd cheering inside my head, but I am so much more determined to make more dreams come true in 2016.

George’s budding career began when he exclusively interviewed three former doctors at an event last year - and he has since appeared on the red carpet at the premier for the new series alongside new doctor Peter Capaldi, companion Jenna Louise Coleman and producer Steven Moffat.

‘Mini Matt Smith’ also appears at Comic Con events, posing for pictures and signing for autographs whilst dressed as the eleventh doctor, played by Matt Smith.

And the Sutton Community Academy pupil donates all the money he makes to Dreams Come True.

George said: “I enjoy what I am doing because I make lots of new friends and get to go to so many amazing events.”

The youngster said he will work hard to be a good ambassador for the charity, by showing other children that “barriers are just obstacles we can all climb if you work hard and believe in yourself”.

He gave thanks to Dreams Come True for making him an ambassador and also to all those who support him along the way.
