Army veteran assaulted woman
A Mansfield Woodhouse man found guilty of assaulting his ex girlfriend has escaped a jail sentence.
Stephen Wilkes 54 of Leeming Lane South Mansfield Woodhouse appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court for sentencing after he was found guilty of assaulting a woman by beating her.
The court heard Wilkes had been out with the woman and her friend for drinks on May 3. They had gone to her home where Wilkes had become abusive, threw a can of beer at her hitting her head and punched her in the face.
The woman had refused to attend the court and had been trying to resume their relationship, but her friend had given evidence in his trial.
Wilkes’ defence solicitor told the court Wilkes was a binge drinker and had been drunk during the attack. Wilkes had served in the armed forces in the Gulf War and had suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
District Judge Jonathan Taaffe Sentenced Wilkes to a 12 month community order with an alcohol treatment requirement and a seven day residence condition.
