Are we there yet? M1 roadworks to be finished soon

Highways England has announced the Smart Motorways scheme on the M1 in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire is delayed - but it won't be long until it is ready.

The Smart Motorways work between J28 for Alfreton and J31 for Worksop started in July 2014, and there have been several delays to the maintenance work since.

The roadworks brought a 50mph speed limit, narrow lanes and average speed cameras to the carriageways in both directions.

These restrictions were lifted at the end of 2015, but the carriageway still requires some general maintenance work on the technology before the Smart Motorways system is fully in place.

And Highways England said this section of the motorway is expected to be ready by spring this year.

A spokesman said: “We are currently looking at the technology and carrying out general maintenance work so we can make sure everything is in place before we open.

“The system between junctions 28 and 31 will go live in spring once we are confident that the technology has been tested thoroughly.

“In the meantime the roadworks have been removed between junctions 29 and 31 while work goes on behind the scenes.

“We will continue to engage with local stakeholders and keep them informed of developments.”
