Apprentice mum Shelley wins award

A Sutton mum has won an adult learning award after proving that age was no barrier to launching herself into a completely different career following redundancy.

When Shelley Bowler, 44, was made redundant from her job in insurance she took a stop gap at McDonalds, which led her to take up an apprenticeship.

Shelley said: “I was afraid of failing having been out of education for over 20 years, but I decided to enrol in the course, following in the footsteps of my daughter who was part way through the same qualification.”

She impressed her employer by completing the course in just six months instead of a year and also by using what she had learnt during her Apprenticeship to improve customer service within her restaurant.

Now a crew trainer at McDonalds, Shelley will soon complete a shift manager development programme which will see her promoted to shift manager later this year.

Her achievements and progress are being recognised with a Learning for Work Apprentice Award in the East Midlands as part of Adult Learners’ Week, 14th – 20th June.

McDonald’s Business Manager Kerry Graves, said: “Shelley has used the skills she acquired from completing her Apprenticeship to make her own life and family life better.
