Residents have led calls for something to be done to make Byron Road and Mosley Road safer before a serious accident occurs.

The ‘rows’ as it is known by locals is a popular spot for children to play ball games and ride their bikes.

But coun Don Davis, for Woodhouse in Ashfield, said money needs to be invested in traffic calming measures so motorists are aware of potential hazards. He said: “I had a number of complaints from local residents regarding speeding issues on Byron and Mosley Road. It is open space where kids play and cross the road from the housing area, it is a potential accident area and I want to act now before something happens.”

Annesley is a hot spot for high volumes of traffic as it is the main route into Mansfield and Ashfield from the motorway.

A Freedom of Information request made by coun Davis revealed that there has been two recorded injury accidents at the junction of Annesley Cutting and Byron Road within the last three years alone.

Coun Davis added that he wanted to prevent history repeating itself after an accident in Papplewick saw 15-year-old Harrison Carlin knocked off his bike and killed last year

He said: “I certainly don’t want an after the event reaction by agencies after a child death like there was in Papplewick. We need to act now. I would like to see more signage warning drivers of the hazards.”

The speed limit on the two roads is currently 30mph.
