Almost 300 dangerous dogs seized in Nottinghamshire over the last five years

Four breeds, including Pitbull terriers and Argentine mastiffs, are banned under the 1991 Dangerous Dog Act but the RSPCA wants a change in the law so dogs are banned based on behaviour rather than breed. See more here.

In Nottinghamshire, 298 dangerous dogs have been seized since 2010.

Figures released by Nottinghamshire Police under the Freedom of Information Act show:

• One dangerous dog was seized in 2010 from the Nottingham City Council area. One dog was destroyed.

• In 2011, 12 dangerous dogs were seized, all from the Nottingham City Council area. Four were destroyed.

• 57 dangerous dogs were seized in 2012 - three from Ashfield, two from Broxtowe, 38 from the city, six from Gedling, one from Mansfield, five from Newark and two from Rushcliffe. Forty were destroyed.

• In 2013, 80 dangerous dogs were seized - one from Ashfield, three from Worksop, four from Broxtowe, 48 from the city, two from Gedling, 12 from Mansfield, nine from Newark and one from Rushcliffe. Forty six were destroyed.

• 67 dangerous dogs were seized in 2014 - 43 from the city council area, six from Newark, five from Mansfield, three from Broxtowe, four from Bassetlaw, three from Gedling, two from Ashfield and one from Rushcliffe. Forty one were destroyed.

• In 2015, 81 dangerous dogs were seized - 52 from the City council area, nine from Mansfield, two from Broxtowe, nine from Bassetlaw, three from Gedling, five from Ashfield and one from Rushcliffe. Thirty eight were destroyed and nine are awaiting a decision from the court.
