Alfreton Town Council leader criticises plans to build 500 new homes

THE leader of Alfreton Town Council has hit out at plans to build 500 new homes on green land close to the town.

Developer Wheeldon Brothers Ltd has submitted an outline planning application to build the properties on land known as Outseats Farm - which sits between Mansfield Road to the north and the A38 to the south.

The move will help to meet a Government target of 5,000 new homes being buily in Amber Valley by 2028.

But town council leader Scott Walker says he shares residents’ concerns roads around the nearby Birchwood Estate and the town’s infrastructure would be unable to cope with the population increase the development could bring.

He said: “The estate is very congested and likewise Mansfield Road around the train station. This will cause additional traffic on already stretched infrastructure.

“For as long as I can remember that land has been there as a place for people walking dogs and picking blackberries. It would be better retained for that purpose.”

Coun Walker said any development should be spread throughout the borough to places where there was more potential for infrastructure.

Wheeldon were unavailable for comment when Chad went to press.
