Alfreton Town boss Nicky Law targets eight wins for Conference Premier survival

Alfreton vital win was helped by two first half penalties converted by Bradley Wood.

Karl Hawley put Alfreton three goals to the good, an advantage they retained until the 87th minute, but late goals drew United closer than they deserved.

Three priceless Vanarama Conference points have now given the Reds a chance of avoiding the drop, although they remain in the relegation zone just six points behind Welling with two games in hand.

Said Law: “We’ve nine games coming up and six of them we’re playing teams in and around us and realistically we’ve got to be looking at six wins.

“If we do that we’ll take pressure off and we’re still confident that we can get out of trouble, that brings us six points behind Welling with two games in hand and we’ve just got to keep going.

“We still have 51 points to play for, we’re going to need seven, eight wins out of 17 games - win one lose one - and l’m sure if we get that, 21 points on top of 27 we have already, it’s going to be nearly there. Who knows ?

“It’s a funny old league, look at Telford winning 4-0 at Wrexham, anyone can beat anyone.”

Law also felt the victory at Welling could and should have been far more comfortable than it ended up.

“We were comfortable at 3-0 and could have gone on and made it more really,” he added. “Then we conceded a poor goal for 3-1, then they’re living in hope again and we started to make a few wrong decisions.

“It’s never a penalty by the way - every one of the players has come off and said that - but the referee’s given it and they’re back in the game.

“Then the second one, Anthony Howell’s got the lad out wide, he’s drawn a foul out of him.

“Then we’ve failed to deal with the free-kick and it’s a free header - then second phase they score, but we knew we were there because we knew that was the final whistle, but we were anxious in a game that we should have been out of sight.

“We should have had three penalties, but we don’t get it - we’re just pleased with a win - we knew it was a big game for us.
