Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday, December 4, how Jonathan Alletson, 29, of Greenhill Lane, Riddings, Alfreton, stole deodorant, a multi-tool and cheese.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “He was seen in a Co-op store at Somercotes on November 12 stealing cheese valued at £35 and was identified from CCTV footage.

“Similarly, he stole ten cans of deodorant at Leabrooks on November 18 and was identified from footage.

“On November 29 Alletson was seen in a Nisa store, which he was barred from, and he was confronted and after he left CCTV footage showed he had hidden two cans of deodorant.

“Also, on November 13 he stole a multi-tool from B&Q which had been removed from its packaging.”

Alletson told police something had happened in his personal life and he had reverted to using heroin and crack-cocaine and was stealing to fund his addiction.

The offences were also committed while Alletson was subject to a community order for previous shoplifting.

Alletson pleaded guilty to the four thefts.

Defence solicitor Chris Hallas said Alletson surrendered himself to a police station.

He added: “Mr Alletson started to stay away from drugs but in October he was in the wrong place with the wrong crowd and he began injecting heroin in his groin.”

The only way Alletson recognises he can stop his body from collapsing, according to Mr Hallas, is by being locked up.

Mr Hallas added: “He’s a man who needs help and he’s self-prescribing prison.”

Magistrates sentenced Alletson to 16 weeks’ custody and he must pay £86 compensation.
