Alfreton car thefts

Police are reminding drivers to remain vigilant and remove valuables from their vehicles following a number of thefts in the Alfreton, Riddings, South Normanton and Swanwick areas.

Between Saturday, March 1 and Friday, March 14 there have been eight incidents where thieves have broken into vehicles to target valuables such as handbags, sat-navs, tools, a laptop and an iPod.

The most recent took place sometime overnight between Wednesday, March 12 and Thursday, March 13. A rucksack was stolen from a Vauxhall Corsa parked on Sherwood Street at Leabrooks.

Extra patrols are being put on and officers are reminding residents to make sure they leave their cars secure and with nothing on display.

PC Mark Gibbs said: “During my recent patrols around the Riddings area, I was shocked to see just how many people had left items on show in their cars. By leaving items such as bags, sat-navs or sat-nav holders, laptops, work equipment or tools on show in your vehicle, you are leaving it more vulnerable to being broken into.

“We really need residents to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim by taking the simple security steps of making sure their vehicle is locked and that anything valuable has been removed.”

PC Gibbs added: “I would also ask that if you notice anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles then contact police immediately, as you could potentially help prevent a crime from taking place.”

As well as making sure that vehicles are properly locked, windows are secure and any items removed, motorists are also advised to park in a well-lit area, or a garage if possible, and to remove any marks left behind by sat-nat or other equipment holders.

Anyone with information about the incidents should contact Derbyshire police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

To report suspicious activity call 101, unless a crime is in progress when the number is always 999.
