After-school project is ‘top of the class’

A special club which aims to give youngsters a supportive place to complete homework and keep out of trouble has been shortlisted for a national award.

The Hooray for Homework project, based in the Bellamy Road estate, is in the running for Best Education Project in this year’s National Lottery Awards.

The project, based at the Y5 Internet Cafe in Egmanton Road and run by the YMCA, operates from 3.30pm to 5.30pm each school night for children aged five to 13..

It operates as a drop-in service so youngsters do not need to book places, and also runs education sessions to boost learning.

A spokesman for the National Lottery Awards said: “The Bellamy estate is one of the most severely deprived wards in Mansfield and one of the most economically and socially deprived areas in the country in terms of educational performance, health and crime.

“In such a disadvantaged area, this club is an invaluable service for local families and the community as a whole.

“This club is about more than homework. It also provides a secure, supportive, hopeful and practical alternative to the less positive surrounding influences.
