Advice on using up festive leftovers at Love Food Haste Waste roadshow at Rufford Abbey Christmas Market

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE County Council’s Love Food Hate Waste road shows which took place over the autumn proved so popular that an extra date has been added – and this time the emphasis will be on how to save on food waste over the festive period.

The extra road show is taking place at Rufford Abbey Country Park on Sunday as part of the annual Christmas Craft Market from 10am to 3pm.

There will be live cookery demonstrations featuring chef and restaurant owner Clover Hudson and free recipe cards will be available to help people find imaginative ways to use up leftovers.

The Love Food Hate Waste Nottinghamshire campaign has been launched by the County Council and Veolia Environmental Services (the council’s waste management contractor) to provide useful information to residents on using up, rather than throwing away food and re-using leftovers. Ultimately, the advice can help people save money and at the same time help the environment.

The road show will see Clover create a number of mouth-watering dishes from everyday left-over ingredients and will also feature the special Love Food Hate Waste sausage – a recipe specially created for the campaign by Notts butcher Johnny Pusztai – which uses up left-over baked beans, tomatoes and bacon.

Coun Richard Butler, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s environment and sustainability committee, said: “Wasting food costs the average family £480 a year and this increases to £680 a year for families with children.

“Not only that, but wasting food has a huge environmental impact. If we reduced the amount of food thrown away, it would save the equivalent of at least 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.”
