Staff and students attended the Meden School achievement evening last week, as a way of rewarding young people for their hard work and success over the last academic year.

Individual awards were given out to youngsters who had excelled in exams, or knuckled down to work in the classroom, after the school’s performance was viewed as unsatisfactory by Ofsted in 2011.

The Burns Lane school was subsequently taken over by the Torch Academy Gateway and has seen a major reversal of fortune, including improved teaching and an 18 per cent increase in GCSE .

The event, which took place at The John Fretwell Sporting Complex, also featured talks from guest speakers, including former QPR footballer Tony Thorpe

Ben Travis, from Torch Academy, said: “The evening was about celebrating achievement, in areas such as exam success or working hard in lessons and awards were given out on an individual basis.

“If young people see that their hard work is being rewarded, that is likely to transfer to exam success.

“It was all about raising the aspirations of our young people, and hopefully through this we will see many more students progressing from school to university study or to work placements.”
