Social landlord secures warmer future for tenants

Nearly 2,000 social housing tenants in Nottinghamshire can look forward to warmer houses and lower fuel bills thanks to the success of a local housing association’s insulation project.

With rising energy prices threatening fuel poverty for many households, LHA-ASRA has invested nearly £4.5m in a programme to install loft and cavity-wall insulation across its housing stock.

The programme, which is part-funded by the award of a CERT grant from British Gas, has seen nearly 2,000 homes in north and south Nottinghamshire benefiting from energy-efficiency improvements.

Darren Ibell, group stock investment manager at LHA-ASRA, said: “We’re delighted with how the first phase of the project has gone and are looking forward to our tenants reaping the benefits over the coming year.

“While great strides have been made improving the energy efficiency of new-build homes, those tenants living in older properties have been slower to benefit and we wanted to put that right.

“This investment is a key part of our Affordable Warmth Policy, which will help tenants keep warm while reducing energy usage and fears over the rising costs of energy bills.”

British Gas surveyors began visiting Nottinghamshire properties in June last year assessing individual requirements before installation work began at the end of the month. Alongside the Nottinghamshire properties, improvements have already been made to over 50 per cent of the group’s properties in Northamptonshire and plans are now well underway to extend the programme across properties in Leicestershire and London, making nearly 12,000 in total.

Elaine Glen, one of LHA-ASRA’s Nottingham tenants, said: “The housing association contacted us last year to arrange a date for the work to be done and the whole process was very straight forward. We had loft insulation installed as part of the programme and the house definitely felt much warmer this winter, which was very welcome.”

Darren Ibell added: “The group worked with a partner consultant, Business Solutions in Construction (BSIC Limited), to deliver the programme.”

They brought the necessary expertise and knowledge to the process which has led to the successful delivery of the project. The company’s specialist expertise and commitment to the project has proved invaluable and, thanks to their support, our tenants can look forward to warmer, more comfortable houses and reduced energy bills.”
