When Nahid Hussain and his family took over Saffron Indian Restaurant in Sutton nine months ago they immediately saw that, for some in the area, life was hard.

Nahid, from Loughborough, has always been interested in helping people from a young age, and the 25-year-old saw an opportunity to use the restaurant to achieve something special.

He said: “I became aware that there was a high level of homelessness and poverty across the area and I wanted to do something to help.

“So anyone who is homeless can visit the restaurant during opening hours and receive a cooked meal and a hot drink.

“It is our way of giving back to the community.”

Recent reports from Shelter show that there are ‘dozens’ of homeless people in Mansfield and Ashfield.

A new housing scheme was announced last month which will go some way to help, however nutrition is a huge concern for rough sleepers in the area.

“I want this to be more than just about feeding people. I want everyone to feel that someone cares and that there is somewhere they can go for help,” said Nahid.

The restaurant, which is located in Brook Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, opens six days a week at 5.30pm, closing on Tuesdays.
