Sutton OAPs entertained by wartime disco set at VE Day party
When residents on Thompson Crescent were invited to take part in a lockdown stay at home street party to mark the 75th anniversary of the landmark day the most they could have expected was a social-distanced street singalong to We’ll Meet Again.
But neighbour Mick Taylor (ex DJ Mad Mick) spun some classic wartime tunes in a surprise DJ set – and brought back memories of their jitterbug days.

Hide AdSpeaking ahead of the party at 4pm (May 8) Mick, 66, said: “I had a paper shoved through my door and it said street party Friday May 8 VE Day We are having a celebration with neighbours, each resident will be having a picnic on their respective driveways – why not join in the fun?
“Bring your tables and chairs out.”
“I stopped doing discos two or three years ago . I haven't told anybody but I'm going to set my disco gear up on my driveway. Hopefully it will add a bit of happiness to the elderly residents.
“I am surrounded by OAP bungalows. I've lived on the street for 32 years so I thought I would get my disco set up out of mothballs and play some music from the wartime era. I have Churchill's speech, the Dambusters music, sound effects like planes going over, air raid sirens machine gun sounds - you name it I've got it.
“There will be lots of big band music, Vera Lynn’s We'll meet again , the original Gerry and the Pacemakers You'll Never Walk Alone and lots of modern sounds for the younger end. The inner crescent is all OAP bungalows . I have Polish neighbours so I'll play a few Polish songs so they don't feel left out.
“My DJ name was Mad Mick so nobody knows what to expect. If I think they are getting bored I'll probably play the Coronation Street theme tune.”
