Charity fun dog show part of Abbey’s summer fete

A fun dog show is one of the attractions at the first ever two-day traditional summer fete being held at Newstead Abbey this bank holiday weekend.

Visitors will be able to enjoy outdoor summer games in the picturesque grounds and explore the house - once home to the great romantic poet Lord Byron - on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday between 11am and 4pm.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue, based on Warsop Lane, Blidworth, will host its popular Fun Dog Show on the Sunday.

Owners are being invited to bring their dog along to the event and enter one of eight classes including most handsome dog, dog that looks most like its owner and best junior dog handler.

Registration starts at 11.30am and entry is only £1 per category, per dog.

Winners will be announced at 3pm and all proceeds will go towards the charity’s centre build appeal.

Sapphire McInnes, centre manager, said: “We have been unable to hold a summer show at our centre in Blidworth due to the extensive building work that is currently taking place to modernise and expand, so we’re really grateful to be involved in this event to help raise vital funds for this project.”

Other attractions at the summer fete include horse and carriage tours around the grounds on the Monday, plus craft stalls, cake stalls, refreshments and a teddy bears’ picnic. Afternoon teas can also be pre-booked.

Cara Simmonds, Commercial Development Officer for Nottingham City Council, also commented: “We hold a number of events at Newstead Abbey, but this is the first time we have held a two-day traditional summer fete and we’re delighted that Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be joining us.

“If you’re coming with friends or family there’s plenty of traditional games including croquet, hook-a-duck and giant Connect 4.

“The house has stunning medieval cloisters, Victorian rooms and there is a café to relax in too.”

Parking is available on site for £6 per car.

There are public transport routes to Newstead Abbey via the A60, but the walk to the abbey is a mile long.
