Motoring in the luxury sector

More than 40 years after the Range Rover was first revealed Land Rover recently launched the fourth generation of the iconic luxury 4x4 and this superb vehicle is now indisputably world wide king of this rarified sector of the motor industry writes Bryan Longworth.

Soon after the first generation was launched Range Rover was undoubtedly top car in this sector when competition was not so intense but then it came under fire from the Germans and Japanese and for a considerable period the foreign opposition gave the Rangie a tough time.

But with the latest model there is no doubt whatsoever that Range Rover is top dog both on and off the road where it reigns supreme as a luxury car that provides a superb ride over any road surface and is even better than ever over the toughest off road terrain.

Thanks to a lightweight all-aluminium body new Range Rover is 420kg lighter than the outgoing model which delivers improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions an even more luxurious interior and an improved terrain response system that automatically selects the most suitable settings with a wading depth of 900mm and obstacle clearance of almost 300mm.

My test car was one of the top models the 3.0L TDV6 Diesel Autobiography costing £87,910 with eight speed automatic transmission and a V6 diesel engine producing a top speed of 130mph with a combined fuel consumption of 37.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 196g/km.

It has the ultimate in leather clad interiors with two exective rear seats each with their own screen entertainment system including TV and up front there is an eight inch touch screen also with TV plus a very effective digital instrument cluster with the tailgate opening automatically via a button on the key control unit. Potential owners looking for a large luxury car such as the Rolls Royce look no further than the latest Range Rover. My Verdict: A global superstar.
