Kings Clipstone marks war dead with hand made poppies and new monument

A silent soldier stands guard over a Kings Clipstone monument which features a cascade of hand-made poppies honour the village’s war dead.

The soldier has been positioned on top of the area known as the Rat Hole, on the B6030, in time for Remembrance Sunday on November 8. Residents helped to create the hundreds of knitted and crocheted red poppies to compliment the monument

The silent soldier was made and donated to the village by A1 Flue Systems based in Boughton.

Parish Councillor Cate Hunt said: “For the first time in the history of Kings Clipstone village there is now a commemorative monument to remember all those who gave so much to save so many throughout many conflicts.

"It is a new addition to the village and has been installed in preparation for Remembrance Day although due to Covid 19 lockdown restrictions a Remembrance Day service is not possible but Kings Clipstone Parish Council is encouraging residents to individually visit the monument to pay their respect to all past and present Armed Forces personnel.

Cate added: “In addition to the monument a resident has been researching five young men from the village who gave their lives in the First World War and we will be investigating to find out more about them in time, so they too can be honoured too.

“The monument is history in the making for Kings Clipstone residents’ as it provides a place of commemoration and recognition for all those past and present in the armed forces who give so much for us. A big thank you goes out to A1 Flue System for their generosity.”
