Parkinsons aqua and social sessions launch at Mansfield's Water Meadows Leisure Complex
A new weekly programme of aqua and social sessions designed to support people living with Parkinson’s have launched at Water Meadows Leisure Complex in Mansfield.
The sessions run every Thursday at 10.30am and combine water-based exercise and social activities, providing both physical and wellbeing benefits.
Each session includes a 45-minute aqua exercise class, followed by a social session with refreshments, giving participants the opportunity to relax, chat and connect with others.
The aqua sessions feature a range of gentle exercises such as walking in water, stepping and stretching.
Exercises have been approved with the Neurological Rehab team at Mansfield Community Hospital and will be demonstrated using tablets, allowing participants to choose their own level of activity to suit their individual needs.
No technical skills are required, and a qualified facilitator will be on hand to support participants throughout.
There is also the option to play Boccia, either as an alternative for those who do not wish to take part in the pool session or as part of the social element.
Carolyn Hallam, health & wellbeing manager for Leisure Solutions Community Trust (LSCT), which operates the centre in partnership with Serco Leisure, said: “I’d like to thank Parkinson’s UK for the funding.
"Sessions will be offered at a reduced cost of £3.50 per session.
“For people living with Parkinson’s, the programme offers a welcoming, supportive space to stay active, build confidence and connect with others in the community.”
Coun Andy Burgin (Lab), portfolio holder for environment and leisure at Mansfield Council, added: "I'm really pleased to hear about this new programme to support people living with Parkinson's disease.
"The benefits of water-based exercise are huge, allowing for greater mobility, improved balance, and reducing pressure on the joints.
"As well as the aqua therapy, the Boccia sessions sound like a fun way to stay active and meet new people, which is certain to have a positive impact on mental health too.
"Great work to everyone involved at Water Meadows Leisure Complex and Mansfield Community Hospital for putting these sessions together with the support of Parkinson's UK."
