The ONS found there was no evidence of differences between men and women or between people from different age groups in the proportions of those testing positive.

It said the number of people being infected each week could range from 29,000 to 111,000, while the number of people infected at any given time could be anywhere between 85,000 to 208,000.

The ONS added that the latest estimate of people with COVID-19 was similar to the previous one, suggesting that the number of people with the disease is relatively stable.

The total number of confirmed cases in the UK since the outbreak started stands at 248,293, according to Public Health England, though many people who had the disease would never have been tested.
