The Ashfield area, along with Mansfield and the rest of Nottinghamshire, is now in the very high tier 3 level of rules, which came into force at one minute past midnight.
Pubs and bars must now close unless they serve a substantial meal, and households are banned from mixing indoors or in private gardens and beer gardens.
A number of other measures have been agreed by local leaders which mean businesses including betting shops, car boots and auction houses must close, as well as tattoo parlours, tanning and nail salons, and piercing services.
This makes the rules in Nottinghamshire among the strictest in the country.
The rules are in force for 28 days.
